91ÊÓƵPolicy on Funding Endoscopic Research
The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) supports an expansion of the federal investment in endoscopic research, based on priorities developed by clinicians and scientists who work in and out of government agencies. 91ÊÓƵalso endorses the development of, and support for, skilled endoscopic investigators.
Endoscopic research should encompass basic, translational and clinical research. 91ÊÓƵis particularly interested in promoting federal support for endoscopic research pertaining to Barrett’s esophagus, capsule endoscopy, colorectal cancer, controlled trials in endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, comparative effectiveness research in endoscopy, endoscopic optical recognition techniques, new quality indicators in endoscopy, natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery and innovative endoscopic treatments for obesity.
Under the Recalcitrant Cancer Research Act of 2013, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has to develop research initiatives in pancreatic cancer – a condition where endoscopy plays a significant role in diagnosis and management. 91ÊÓƵwill advocate that the NCI to develop research initiatives targeted on endoscopic innovation in the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer, as well as other cancers of the digestive system including esophageal, stomach, colorectal and liver cancers.
